A week after traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., to start the year, the No. 73 Nebraska men’s tennis team will hit the road again this weekend for a pair of matches against the Indiana Hoosiers and the Georgia State Panthers at the VarsityTennisCenter in Bloomington, Ind.  The Huskers will take on Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 7., at 10 a.m.  The Hoosiers enter the match ranked at No. 57 in the nation while holding an overall record of 4-4.  The Huskers will then battle GeorgiaState on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m.  The Panthers will be looking for their first win of the season this weekend after starting the year 0-4.

Huskers Blank Dons, Fall To UNLV

To start the spring season, the Huskers traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., to battle the San Francisco Dons and the host UNLV Rebels at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.  NU got the season off on the right foot defeating San Francisco, 6-1, in dominating fashion.  The Huskers won all but one singles match and took two of the doubles matches.  At the top two spots for the Huskers, No. 74 David Bendheim (NU) defeated Tommy Tu (USF) 6-4, 6-3, and Calin Paar (NU) defeated Rainer Nachbauer (USF) 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot.  Hendrik Stahmer cruised to an easy victory at the No. 4 spot taking down Mitch del Rosario (USF) 6-0, 6-2. The two freshmen in the Husker lineup, Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, both picked up victories in their first spring matches as Huskers at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively.

The second match of the weekend didn’t go as well for the Huskers as they fell to undefeated UNLV, 4-3.  NU was only able to win two singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots.  Paar beat Mehdi Bouras (UNLV) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Lindheim defeated Bryan Miller (UNLV) 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot. Both Paar and Lindheim improved their singles record to 2-0 on the weekend. In doubles play, Aumueller and Lindheim continued their impressive weekend by defeating Mehdi Bouras and Wesley Burrows (UNLV) 8-2, at the No. 2 spot, while Stahmer and Francois Van Impe beat Attila Toth and Bryan Miller (UNLV) 8-3.  At the No. 1 doubles spot, No. 17 Bendheim and Paar (NU) were defeated for the second time on the weekend by Elliot Wronski and Luca Barlocchi (UNLV) 8-5.

Scouting the Indiana Hoosiers

Coming out of the Big Ten Conference, the Indiana Hoosiers enter the match ranked at No. 57 in the nation with an overall record of 4-4.  After winning their first four matches of the season, the Hoosiers will be looking to get back on track against the Huskers after dropping their last four matches.  The Hoosiers will be led by sophomore Lachlan Ferguson. The unranked Ferguson is fresh off his upset over No. 42 Deigo Cubas of South Carolina in the Hoosiers last match.

Scouting the GeorgiaState Panthers

The Georgia State Panthers returnd six players from a team that went 1-16 a year ago.  Led by second year coach Jarod Camerota, the Panthers are still trying to find their first victory of the season after starting 0-4.  The Panther’s top player is senior Nejc Podkrajsek. Podkrajsek, ranked at No. 95 in the nation, has recorded a 2-2 singles record so far this season.  As a junior, Podkrajsek posted an overall record of 20-11, while being named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player Of The Year.

Husker Freshman Make Impact

Through the first two matches of the season, true freshmen Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim have made an immediate impact on the Huskers’ lineup.  The German natives combined to win three singels matches over the weekend, while winning both doubles matches the duo played in.  Aumueller tallied a record of 3-1 on the weekend, defeating Asaf Cohen (USF) in his first match of the season.  Lindheim had the most impressive weekend of any Husker, recording a record of 4-0.  In doubles, the two paired up to beat Bouras and Burrows (UNLV) and Hart and Carreno (USF) at the No. 2 spot.

On The Road Again...And Again

The Nebraska men’s tennis team will rack up its frequent flyer miles this spring as the first 10 matches on the Huskers’ schedule are on the road.  The Huskers will travel to the likes of Bloomington, Ind., San Antonio, Texas, Des Moines, Iowa, and Denver, Colo., before returning home.  The Huskers’ first home match is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, against WichitaState. The Huskers will also take on Bradley and UMKC that day in a triple-header at the NebraskaTennisCenter.
