Jackson, Miss. ? The No. 3 Nebraska bowling team closed out its fall season in superior fashion as it claimed its third tournament title of the season at the Capital City Collegiate Classic on Sunday afternoon. NU rolled a total pinfall of 12,900 in the three-day tournament, almost 900 pins above fifth-ranked ArkansasState.
Individually, Nebraska placed four Huskers in the All-Tournament team standings. Erin McCarthy, a freshman from MillardNorthHigh School in Omaha, Neb., captured her first top-place finish with a collegiate career-high average of 236. McCarthy’s average marks the highest among any Husker bowling in the 2008-09 season. She also cracked the top-10 single-season averages in Nebraska’s record book, where she sits seventh with her 236 average.
Sophomore Katie Ann Sopp, a native of Circle Pines, Minn., earned a second-place finish with a 216 average, which marks her 2008-09 season-high average. Kaleena Henning, a junior from North Platte, Neb., claimed third place with a 214 average. Henning’s average and third-place finish mark the best finish in her collegiate career at Nebraska. Junior Cassie Leuthold rounded out the all-tournament team with a 212 average for a fifth-place finish, which is Leuthold’s third top-five finish of the 2008 season.
Freshman Valerie Calberry also earned her third top-10 finish of the season with a 197 average for eighth place.
Although the Huskers wrap up their 2008 fall season, they will be back in action on Jan. 16-18 at the Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
