Huskers Finish Fall Classic with 4-0 Record

Lincoln - Right-handers Alex Hupp and Molly Hill combined on a two-hit shutout to lead the Nebraska softball team past Nebraska-Omaha, 1-0, on Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. With the win, NU finished the Husker Fall Classic with a perfect 4-0 record.

The Nebraska pitching staff tossed 26 scoreless innings in the tournament, allowing just 10 hits. Against the Mavericks, Hupp earned her first start of the fall and scattered two hits over five innings. Hill came on in relief and earned the save by allowing just one walk in two hitless innings.

Hupp also contributed offensively, finishing 2-for-3 and driving in the lone run of the game. Fellow junior Whitney Barrett added two hits of her own as Nebraska finished with seven hits in the contest.

Nebraska jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with the help of a UNO error. Senior Amanda Duran reached on an error to begin the frame and fellow senior Darcy Rutherford came in to run for Duran. Rutherford moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third. She then scored when Hupp lined a 1-0 pitch into right center for an RBI single.

The Huskers nearly added a big inning in the top of the fourth. Duran led off with an infield single and was again replaced by Rutherford. Senior Haley Long then appeared to rip at least a double over the center fielder's head, but Rutherford was called out for leaving early, negating the double. After the base runner was erased, Long grounded out before Hupp and sophomore Julie Brechtel recorded back-to-back singles. Sophomore Heidi Foland then laced a ball back up the middle that UNO second baseman Treightin Yates dove to her left and caught to save a run and end the inning.

Neither team mounted much of a scoring threat over the final three innings.

UNO finished the Husker Fall Classic with a 2-2 record. Melissa Negrete took the loss against Nebraska, allowing just one unearned run in a complete-game effort.

With the Husker Fall Classic complete, Nebraska will compete in its final fall tournament, the Hawkeye Fall Classic in Iowa City, Iowa, Oct. 4-5.
