Norman, Okla. ? Junior Tricia Woo won the first Big 12 beam crown of her career to lead No. 14 Nebraska at the Big 12 Championships at Oklahoma’s LloydNobleCenter on Saturday night. The Huskers posted a score of 194.975 to finish fourth in the team standings behind No. 9 Oklahoma (195.875), IowaState (195.775) and No. 18 Missouri (195.225). NU drops to 10-7 on the season.
Woo, a three-time All-American from Milpitas, Calif., tied with OU’s Haley DeProspero with a score of 9.90 to win the event title.
“Tricia’s confidence the last month has been unbelievable,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It’s been absolutely enjoyable to watch her compete. She has worked hard and deserves all the success she has had this year. She’s having fun and showing confidence, and that’s a great combination.”
The top three finishers in each event, including the all-around, were also named to the All-Big 12 Championship Team. Senior Emily Parsons was named to the team for three events after finishing second in the all-around (39.325) and vault (9.925) and fourth on beam (9.85). Woo was honored on beam and floor (9.875), while senior Desire' Sniatynski was also included with a fourth-place finish in the all-around (39.225) and a third-place showing on bars (9.85).
Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Parsons set the pace with a 9.925 to take runner-up honors. Woo, Sniatynski and freshman Erin Davis landed in a tie for 10th with matching scores of 9.80, while sophomore Maria Scaffidi added a 9.775. After one rotation, Nebraska stood in first place with an event total of 49.10 over Oklahoma (48.10), Missouri (48.975) and IowaState (48.75).
NU then moved on to bars and was led by Sniatynski’s third-place score of 9.85. Parsons took 10th with a 9.775, and Woo and sophomore Kathryn Howard posted matching marks of 9.60. The Huskers continued onto the third rotation on beam, where Woo was the team’s event leader with a 9.90 to secure the event win. Parsons’ performance earned her a fourth-place 9.85, and Scaffidi notched a 9.80 to finish seventh. Sniatynski added a 9.775, and freshman Brittnee Habbib contributed a 9.675. NU finished beam with a 49.00, a running score of 146.075 and fourth-place standing behind MU (146.80), ISU (146.70) and OU (146.60).
Nebraska capped the evening on floor, and Woo led the way with a third-place 9.975. Sniatynski tallied a score of 9.80 for eighth, and Parsons followed up with a 9.775. Scaffidi added a 9.75, and Davis put up a 9.70, bringing the Huskers to an event total of 48.90 and a final team score of 194.975.
“This was a heartbreaking meet because we didn’t perform like we were capable of tonight,” Kendig said. “I know we have the team that could win this, but we just didn’t have that kind of meet. It’s disappointing, but the good news is that we can get back in the gym and get going again.
“This team is at a crossroads right now. We’re still on track to what we need to do nationally. Our score might hurt us a little bit in seeding, but we still have a job to do. Anything is possible, and just need to pick up the pieces to reestablish the confidence we need to be successful.”
Oklahoma’s team title marked their second Big 12 championship in program history. The Sooners improved to 22-0 on the season with the win.
Nebraska, which has won a total of 20 conference titles in school history, will await its fate with the announcement of the NCAA Regional fields on Monday, March 31.
