Lincoln ? The No. 13 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high team total to defeat No. 14 Missouri 196.675-195.35, Friday night at the DevaneyCenter. In front of 2,416 fans, NU posted a 49.0 or better on vault, bars and floor, and two Huskers swept all five individual event titles.
Senior Emily Parsons captured first in the all-around (39.525), vault (9.925), beam (9.90) and floor (9.90), while senior Desire’ Sniatynski took the bars crown with a 9.90. Parsons’ marks on beam, floor and the all-around were all season highs. Sophomore Maria Scaffidi also placed fourth with a career-high 39.275.
“I can’t say enough about Emily, Desire’ and Maria (Scaffidi) and the job they did today,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “The three of them make up half our routines, and they really hit tonight. They did an outstanding job of leading our team in this win.”
Nebraska opened with an outstanding team showing on vault, totaling a 49.425 for the second-highest vault score in the nation this season. Parsons sparked the Huskers with a 9.925 for her first event title of the day, followed by Sniatynski’s career-high 9.90 for second. Junior Tricia Woo and freshman Erin Davis matched season bests of 9.875 in a tie for fourth, and Scaffidi added a 9.85. NU finished the rotation ahead of the Tigers’ first-rotation bars total of 48.40.
The Huskers continued on to bars, where Sniatynski was the team’s top performer with a career-high-tying 9.90 to take top honors. Junior Vanessa Meloche made her season debut with a 9.875 and tied for runner-up honors, while freshman Brittnee Habbib put up a season-high 9.85 for fourth. Scaffidi and parsons put up matching scores of 9.80, and Nebraska wrapped up bars with a season-best 49.225 and a running score of (98.65) over MU (97.30).
The Huskers moved on to the third rotation on beam, and Parsons led the way with a 9.90 to finish first. Woo followed up with a 9.875 for (place), while Scaffidi contributed a (place)-place 9.80. Habbib and Sniatynski added scores of 9.725 and 9.675, respectively, and NU wrapped up beam with a 48.975 and a runner score of 147.625 over the Tigers’ 146.25 heading into the final event.
The Huskers capped the evening in floor, where Parsons stole the show with a 9.90 for first place and her third event title. Sniatynski placed third with a 9.85, and Woo and Scaffidi tied for fifth (9.825). Habbib added a 9.60, giving NU an event score of 49.05 and a final team total of 196.675 to seal the win over Missouri, which totaled a 195.35 on the day.
“It was good to be home because this team loves competing in this arena,” Kendig said. “It’s fun being here, and it’s fun starting on vault with such momentum. We hit 23 of 24 routines today. I’m so proud of each one of our athletes. They all fought hard. All eight contributed to this win, and a 196.675 is a big score for this team at this time of the year. That’s a tribute not only to their talent, but also their focus.”
Nebraska travels to No. 7 Oklahoma next Friday, Feb. 1. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in a double dual with the Nebraska and Oklahoma men’s gymnastics teams.
