Nebraska Tops Arizona State

Lincoln ? The No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team played host to ArizonaState in its first home meet of the year Sunday afternoon, posting a smashing 195.55-193.075 win at the DevaneyCenter. In front of 1,131 fans, the Huskers posted a 49.0 or better on vault and bars and swept the individual event titles.

 

Senior Emily Parsons won the all-around (39.475), vault (9.925) and floor (9.875), while senior Desire’ Sniatynski placed second in the all-around with a career-high 39.45. Sniatynski captured the bars title with a career-best-tying 9.90, and junior Tricia Woo earned the beam crown with a career-high 9.925.

 

“Emily is an incredible competitor, and she fixed the problems she had earlier in Ames to come back stronger today,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “Tricia and Desire’ really stepped up today and had an outstanding meet, and they picked up their pace to another level. But this win couldn’t have come without every athlete’s contribution today.”

 

Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Parsons sparked the Huskers with a season-best score of 9.925 for her first event title of the day. Sniatynski and freshman Erin Davis tied for second with matching marks of 9.85, while Woo earned fourth with a season-high 9.825. Sophomore Maria Scaffidi followed up in sixth (9.775), helping NU to a season-best event score of 49.225, ahead of the Sun Devils’ first-rotation bars total of 47.525.

 

The Huskers continued on to bars, and Sniatynski set the pace with a career-high-tying 9.90 to take top honors. Parsons and freshman Brittnee Habbib tied for second with season-high marks of 9.825, while sophomore Kathryn Howard and Scaffidi added a 9.75 apiece for sixth place. Nebraska wrapped up bars with a 49.05 and a running score of 98.275 over ASU (96.15).

 

Nebraska moved on to the third rotation on beam, where Woo was the team’s top performer with a career-high 9.925 to take her first title of the year. Parsons and Sniatynski followed with a pair of 9.85s for (place), and Scaffidi put up a 9.675. Howard earned a score of 9.025, and NU wrapped up beam with a 48.325 and a running score of 146.60 to the Sun Devils’ 144.70 heading into the final event.

 

The Huskers capped the day on floor, where Parsons and Sniatynski earned scores of 9.875 and 9.85 for first and second, respectively. Woo placed third with a 9.825, and Habbib and Scaffidi’s marks of 9.70 left them in a tie for seventh. NU finished with an event score of 48.95 and a final team total of 195.55 to seal the win over ArizonaState, which totaled a 193.075 on the day.

 

“This was a total team effort today,” Kendig said. “I was fearful of the back-to-back meets backfiring on us this weekend with how thin our roster is right now, but this team knew they could improve from the IowaState meet. I’m very pleased with everyone’s effort. As a coaching, it’s fun to watch them attain the goals they are capable of achieving each time out.”

 

Nebraska travels to No. 2 Utah this Friday, Jan. 18. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the HuntsmanCenter in Salt Lake City.
