Fort Atkinson, Wis. - Three Huskers earned top-five finishes as the Nebraska bowling team claimed its first tournament title of the season at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Cheeseland Classic this afternoon.
Despite ending the first day of competition in seventh place, the Huskers were able to make up for their lost pins and finish the tournament with top honors and a total pinfall of 11,841.
"We were down 439 pins after the first day," Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said, "But we just have to chalk this competition up to freshman jitters. We were able to overcome and win the competition. I am very proud of the team."
Nebraska claimed three of the five all-tournament spots. Sophomore Cassandra Leuthold, the 2007 National Tenpin Coaches Association Rookie of the Year, earned first place with an average of 210. Senior Lindsay Baker, the 2006 National Player of the Year, claimed second place with a 205 average and earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors. Newcomer Christine Bator, a freshman from Warren, Mich., rounded out the all-tournament team with a 198 average for fourth place. Kaleena Henning, a junior from North Platte, Neb., rolled a 183 average for 11th, while freshman Katie Ann Sopp earned 19th place with a 179 average.
The Huskers return to action on Nov. 15-17 for the Maverick Challenge in Chicago, Ill.
