Lincoln ? Sophomore Amanda Jeffries took home runner-up honors in smallbore, but it was not enough to lead the Nebraska rifle team over defending NCAA champion Alaska-Fairbanks at the NU Rifle Range on Sunday, as the Huskers posted a 4,614 to UAF’s 4,654.
Jeffries posted a mark of 578 in smallbore to finish second, in addition to a sixth-place showing in air rifle (582). Senior Katie Harrington had a strong day in air rifle as Nebraska’s highest finisher in fourth place (585), followed by freshman Elisha LaFond’s fifth-place (583) showing. Sophomore Christine Costello also placed fourth in smallbore with a 574.
In the team competition, Alaska-Fairbanks topped NU in both categories, narrowly outshooting the Huskers in air rifle 2,299-2,292. The Nanooks also totaled a 2,355 to Nebraska’s 2,355 in smallbore.
"I was pleased with the team's improvement from Friday to Sunday," Head Coach Morgan Hicks said. "We were more cohesive, and our scores showed that. Amanda Jeffries was very consistent in leading the team in smallbore all weekend, and I look for her to continue that trend through the rest of the season."
