The Nebraska bowling team rolled to success in its 2006-07 campaign as 10th-year Head Coach Bill Straub led the Huskers to an oustanding 73-15 regular-season record and a third-place finish at the NCAA tournament.
Nebraska started off the season ranked No. 2 in the National Tenpins Coaches Association bowling poll, but as the season progressed the Huskers began to step up their level of competition and finished the regular season with a No. 1 rating.
In addition to NU's success on the lanes, four bowlers earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll for their oustanding academic accomplishments during the 2006 fall semester. Senior Amanda Burgoyne, redshirt freshmen Kalyn Washburn and Stephanie McGinnis and freshman Sarah Izydorek were among 270 Nebraska student-athletes to earn the award, which recognizes student-athletes who earn a 3.0 grade-point average or higher.
The Huskers began their season at the Cheeseland Classic in Whitewater, Wis., on Saturday, Nov. 11. NU fell short of the title, rolling a total pinfall of 13,372 for a second-place finish. Redshirt freshman Cassandra Leuthold placed second and earned a spot on the all-tournament team in her first collegiate bowling tournament with a 200.36 average. Senior Amanda Burgoyne also earned a spot in the all-tournament team, averaging 195 for a fourth-place finish.
Nebraska earned its first tournament title of the season at the Maverick Challenge in Chicago, Ill., on Sunday, Nov. 18, with a total pinfall of 13,576. Leuthold captured her first individual tournament title, averaging a 202 for the top spot on the all-tournament team. Burgoyne also earned a spot on the all-tournament team with a 197 average for third place. Junior Lindsay Baker rounded out Nebraska's all-tournament selections, placing fourth with a 195 average.
Three Huskers earned spots on the all-tournament team as Nebraska tied for a first-place finish at the Valley Classic at Greenwood, Miss., on Sunday, Dec. 3. Nebraska and Vanderbilt shared the crown, each 7-1 on the tournament. Burgoyne led the Huskers with a 212 average over eight games for a second-place finish. Senior Adrienne Miller placed third with a 203 average, while Baker placed fourth with a 200 average.
After nearly a two-month break, Nebraska returned to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Ozark Invitational at Sprinfield, Mo. Leuthold topped the individual charts, averaging a collegiate-career high of 230. Leuthold's first-place finish earned her a top-spot on the all-tournament team. Miller placed second with a 229 average, while Burgoyne also earned an all-tournament team spot with a fourth-place finish and a 224 average.
Burgoyne earned a spot on the all-tournament team as the Huskers claimed third at the Mid-Winter Classic at Jonesboro, Ark., on Sunday, Feb. 4. NU rolled a total pinfall of 9,042 and held a record of 7-2 in the three-day event. Burgoyne placed third with a 198 average on the weekend.
Nebraska topped several of the nation's best teams at the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, Feb. 17, earning a first-place finish with a total pinfall of 9,220. Burgoyne rolled a season-high 230 average for a first-place finish in the competition. Baker also had a season-best finish, placing second with a 220 average.
The Huskers continued on the right foot, earning a first-place finish at the Music City Classic at Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday, March 18. NU finished the event with an 8-2 record and a total pinfall of 9,557. Burgoyne led the Huskers to victory, rolling an average of 202 over ten games for a second-place finish, while Miller held a 198 average for fourth place.
Nebraska wrapped up its regular season with a first-place finish at the Windy City Classic at Chicago, Ill., on Sunday, March 25. NU held a total pinfall of 13,485, which was nearly 400 pins over second-place Central Missouri State. Five Nebraska bowlers rolled their way into the top ten. Miller led the Huskers with a 222 average for a second-place finish and a spot on the all-tournament team. Leuthold rolled to a fourth-place finish with a 219 average, earning an all-tournament team spot. Redshirt freshman Sarah Koch also made the all-tournament team with a season-best 218 average for fifth place. Baker averaged a 209 for eighth place, while Burgoyne rounded out the top ten with a 201 average.
Following their outstanding regular season, the Huskers earned their fourth-consecutive bid to the NCAA Championship tournament on April 12-14 in Apopka, Fla.
After one day of competition at the NCAA tournament, Nebraska was in second place and only 15 pins behind top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson. NU shot a total pinfall of 8,553 over nine games in the qualifying rounds. The Huskers rolled a pinfall of 4,235 in the traditional format, before they shot a 4,318 in the Baker-style competition. Miller earned a third-place finish on the day, averaging a career-high 230.75 over four games. She also claimed the singles third-game high, rolling a 259 over ten frames. Leuthold also came on strong, averaging a 226.25 over four games.
After Thursday's qualifying rounds, NU earned a second-place seed in Friday's double elimination tournament. The Huskers started first-round action on the right foot, defeating seventh-seeded New Jersey City, 4-2 (226-172, 226-192, 178-184, 202-182, 236-237, 205-191).
Upsets plagued the top teams in the second round, as Fairleigh Dickinson fell to Maryland-Eastern Shore and Nebraska fell to Vanderbilt, 2-4 (214-230, 185-191, 215-219, 203-194, 236-219, 182-185).
The Huskers then faced Central Missouri State in round three, where they defeated the Jennies, 4-3 (167-184, 258-143, 194-209, 201-199, 246-231, 202-207, 236-200). Fairleigh Dickinson also defeated Sacred Heart to advance to round five.
Nebraska ended its 2007 NCAA Championship appearance on Friday, April 13, after a fifth-round loss to No. 5 Maryland-Eastern Shore. Fairleigh Dickinson was defeated by Vanderbilt, resulting in a third-place tie between Fairligh Dickinson and Nebraska.
