Austin, Texas? The 80th annual Texas Relays concluded on a sour note for Nebraska Saturday, as inclement weather forced Huskers to pull out of seven scheduled event finals. NU did have three athletes participate on the final day in senior Aaron Ross, junior Jenny Green and sophomore Brysun Stately.
Temperatures dipped into the low 40’s Saturday at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Meyers Stadium, while it also rained throughout the day. Several teams pulled all of their athletes out of the meet and some events were canceled altogether, while the fields for other events were cut down so much that only a few competitors remained. A second group of Huskers scheduled to compete at the Emporia State Relays in Emporia, Kan., were left with a wasted weekend of competition after the meet was rescheduled for Monday.
Ross still participated in the Texas Relays men’s 110-meter hurdles final despite the poor conditions and managed to finish fifth with a time of 14.48. He advanced to the final with a regional-qualifying effort of 14.22 on Friday.
Green and Stately competed in an abbreviated section A of the women’s pole vault that featured only five athletes making just 19 total attempts. Both Huskers were unable to reach the opening height of 12-5 ?.
Seniors Gable Baldwin and Nic Petersen were also scheduled to compete in section A of the men’s pole vault Saturday, but the event was cancelled.
Due to Saturday’s postponement of the Emporia State Relays, Nebraska will have several athletes competing at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational in Lincoln. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. at Nebraska Weleyan’s Abel Stadium. The Huskers will then hit the road next weekend for the John Jacobs Invitational Friday through Saturday in Norman, Okla.
