Boulder City, Nev. - The Nebraska women's golf team shot 298 for the third straight day to finish 13th at the UNLV Spring Invitational on Tuesday. The Huskers closed the 54-hole tournament at 894 on the 6,199-yard par-72 layout at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Nebraska finished 47 strokes behind the tournament champions from Brigham Young, which finished the three-round event at 17-under par with a final round 284. BYU fired below-par team scores each of the three days to finish at 847. Fellow Mountain West Conference competitor New Mexico finished 10 strokes back in second place at 857, after a final-round 283. Idaho finished third with a five-under-par team score of 859 for the tournament.
Fresno State's Jennifer Shipley and Idaho's Kelly Nakashima knocked BYU's Rachel Newren out of the top spot in the individual race with spectacular final rounds. Shipley scorched the course with an eight-under-par 64 to finish the tournament with an 11-under-par 205. Nakashima added a spectacular round of 65 on Wednesday to tie Shipley at 11-under-par heading into an individual playoff.
Newren, who led the tournament after each of the first two rounds, finished four strokes back in third at 209 after a final-round 72 on Wednesday.
Nebraska freshman Kate White continued her climb up the leaderboard with a one-under-par 71 to finish in a tie for 22nd at 219.
Senior Chrissie McArdle added a top-50 finish for the Huskers in the 18-team tournament with a one-over-par 73 in the final round to close the tournament at 225 in a tie for 48th.
Freshman JC Stevenson contributed a 76 to finish in a tie for 56th at 227, while junior Allison Stewart closed the tournament in a tie for 60th at 228 after managing a final-round 78. Junior Elli Brown added a 78 of her own in the third round to finish in a tie for 76th at 232.
Megan Place fired her best round of the tournament with a 77 on Wednesday to finish in 89th at 241, while playing as an unattached individual.
Nebraska will travel directly from Nevada to Austin, Texas, to take part in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational March 16-18. The Huskers will participate in Thursday's practice round before opening the tournament on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
