Parrish, Fla. - Freshman Kate White completed a solid opening spring tournament with a final round 78 to finish in a tie for 18th at the Central District Invitational at the River Wilderness Golf Club on Tuesday.
White, a native of Waukegan, Ill., closed the 54-hole tournament on the 6,099-yard, par-72 River Wilderness course with a 227 to lead the Huskers to a 13th-place team finish in the 14-team tournament. As a team, the Huskers posted their best round of the spring with a 310 on Tuesday morning to move ahead of Tulsa in the final standings.
"Obviously we struggled yesterday, especially in the short game with our chipping and our putting, but that is what we expected somewhat in our first tournament," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "It is encouraging that we improved our scores each round, and we have a place start and plenty of room for improvement this spring."
In addition to three strong rounds from White, the Huskers received their second straight solid round from junior Elli Brown. The Meridian, Idaho, native produced a 76 in the final round to climb seven spots into a tie for 46th.
Senior Chrissie McArdle and junior Allison Stewart added their best rounds of the tournament by each firing 78 over the final 18 holes, while freshman JC Stevenson pitched in a final-round 80.
Ashley Knoll from Texas A&M won the individual title with a seven-under-par 209 after firing a three-under 69 on Tuesday. Knoll defeated Michigan State's Sara Brown by six strokes to help the Aggies finish at 874 to outdistance the Spartans (887) by 13 strokes for the team title. Baylor finished a distant third at 905, while Huskers managed a 54-hole score of 946.
The Huskers continue their spring season at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., March 3-4.
