Twelve Huskers Named to Academic All-Big 12 Teams

Twelve University of Nebraska cross country runners were among 126 student-athletes named to the 2006 cross country academic All-Big 12 team, which was announced Tuesday by the conference office.

 

Sophomore Ari Goldstein highlighted the selections for the Big Red, as she was just one of 13 honored throughout the conference with a 4.00 grade point average. It was her first career selection.

 

Goldstein was one of eight NU women named to the first team (3.20 or better GPA), the third most of any Big 12 women’s squad. Four others earned first-time accolades as well, including juniors Channing Anseth and Joslyn Dalton and sophomores Jennifer Pancoast and Sara Prince.

 

Juniors Betsy Miller and Val Zajac back-to-back academic All-Big 12 first team selections, while senior Kim Pancoast was named to the first team for an impressive fourth consecutive year.

 

The Nebraska men attained three spots on the first-team list and one of the second-team, which recognizes those student-athletes with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.19.

 

Senior captain Bryce Dickmeyer earned his third first-team selection in a row, while sophomore Kyle Custer and junior Alec Maduza earned honors for the first time in their careers.

 

Sophomore Brian Parr was named to the second team in his first season eligible for the squad.

 

To qualify for All-Big 12 status, student-athletes much have a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or during the previous two semesters. They must also have participated in 60 percent of his or her scheduled competitions. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year. Seniors who have participated for at least two years and meet all the requirements aside from the percent of competitions ran are also eligible.

 

Nebraska turns its focus on the course to Lawrence, Kan., this week for the 2006 Big 12 Championships. The women’s 6K begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s 8K at 11 a.m.
