Huskers Win Chip-N Club Title

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's golf team captured its fourth consecutive Chip-N Club Invitational title by closing its three-round tournament with a 306 on the par-72, 6,040-yard layout at Yankee Hill Country Club on Tuesday.

Senior Chrissie McArdle tied for first at the end of regulation in the tournament, but Missouri State's Sally Hinton claimed individual medalist honors with a victory on the second playoff hole.

Hinton fired a final-round 74 to close the gap on McArdle, who entered the final 18 holes with a three-stroke lead over Hinton and Alejandra Shaw from Campbell. McArdle closed the day with a 77, to go along with an opening-round 77 and a second-round 75 to finish at 229.

Shaw managed a 75 to finish one stroke back in third place at 230. Shaw helped Campbell to a runner-up team finish, six strokes behind the host Huskers at 935. Kansas finished third at 943, 14 strokes behind the Big Red, while Hinton helped Missouri State finish fourth at 945.

Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said she was proud of her team's effort in the tournament.

"It's nice to have some good competition out on the course pushing us to get better," Krapfl said. "Campbell and Kansas were making every shot count out there today, so we had to work hard to fight them off. This will be a great experience for us later in the year. We had the success of winning a tournament in tough scoring conditions against NCAA Regional-caliber competition. Obviously, our objective was to win the tournament and we accomplished that, so I am proud of our entire team."

Krapfl also said that McArdle's experience in the playoff with Hinton could pay dividends down the road for the Huskers.

"Chrissie just played solid golf throughout the tournament. The last few holes, she was going head-to-head with the players charging from behind, so it may have cost her a couple strokes," Krapfl said. "In the end, it was her first playoff, so it was a great experience for her, and hopefully down the road it will help her in a similar situation."

Junior Elli Brown and true freshman Kate White played major roles in helping the Huskers secure their fourth straight Chip-N Club title. Brown, a native of Meridian, Idaho, fired a three-over-par 75 in the final round to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place at 231.

White, a native of Waukegan, Ill., rebounded from an opening-round 83, to fire back-to-back rounds of 75 to finish in sole possession of seventh place at 233.

Junior Allison Stewart added a fourth Husker individual in the top 15 in the standings, managing an 81 in the third-round to finish at 238.

Senior Andrea Carlson (Dunagan) provided the fourth score to count for the Huskers on Tuesday with a 79. Carlson finished in a tie for 33rd as an individual at 248.

True freshmen Charlotte Wendner (85-81-76-242) and JC Stevenson (88-81-75-244) produced top-30 individual finishes as well in the 80-player tournament. Wendner tied for 21st, while Stevenson finished in a tie for 27th.
