Brown Leads Huskers in Wisconsin

Verona, Wis. - Elli Brown opened the 2006-07 season for the Nebraska women's golf team with consistent rounds of 78 and 77 to sit in a tie for eighth place after the first two rounds of the Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

The solid opening rounds by the junior from Meridian, Idaho, helped the Huskers enter tomorrow's final round in ninth place after producing rounds of 321 and 318 on the 6,175-yard par 72 layout of the University Ridge Golf Course.

Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said Brown's rounds were even more impressive because of the rough playing conditions for the tournament's first two rounds.

"It rained from the time we got on the course in the morning until we got off the course tonight," Krapfl said. "It rained for 11 straight hours, and it just kept getting colder. We had to battle to keep our focus and to just keep our hands on the clubs. It was certainly not ideal scoring conditions out there today. The forecast also calls for more rain tomorrow, so we can expect more of the same."

Nebraska is 19 strokes behind first-place Indiana, which leads the 11-team tournament by two strokes at 620 after rounds of 313 and 307.

Oklahoma sits in second place at 622 (306-316), while Louisville is just strokes out of first at 626 (312-314). The hosts from Wisconsin are one stroke back of the Cardinals at 627 (311-316).

Brown's 11-over-par 155 through two rounds puts her nine strokes off the pace established by Kansas State's Michelle Regan, who fired rounds of three-over-par 75 and one-under-par 71 to close the first 36 holes at 146. Regan owns a one stroke lead over second-place Adrienne White from Louisville, who added the only below-par round of the day with her one-under-par 71 in the first round, before closing the day with a 76 in the second round.

"Under those conditions, Elli played very solid," Krapfl said. "Actually everybody played OK. It was tough on the freshmen. Not only were they out there playing 36 holes for the first time, but the conditions made it very tough. We did some very good things, but we did have some bad numbers. We didn't play well and we could have done a lot better, but it was our first rounds of the season in some pretty miserable playing conditions."

Allison Stewart, playing as an individual outside of the Husker lineup, joins Brown in the top 20. The junior from Vermillion, S.D., produced rounds of 79 and 80 to sit in 20th place at 159 heading into Monday morning's final round.

Three other Huskers are in position to make moves up the leaderboard on Monday, as senior Chrissie McArdle (Eden Prairie, Minn.), sophomore Megan Place (Omaha, Neb.) and true freshman JC Stevenson (Grand Island, Neb.), are all tied for 31st after managing scores of 162 through the opening 36 holes.

Kate White, a true freshman from Waukegan, Ill., is just one stroke behind that Husker trio at 163 in a tie for 37th place, putting all six Huskers among the top 40 among the 68 individuals in the tournament.

Monday's final round of the Badger Invitational is set to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
