Brown Leads NU on Day Two at NCAAs

Columbus, Ohio - Sophomore Elli Brown fired the top round for the Nebraska women's golf team with her two-over-par 74 to lead the Huskers to a 305 team total on the second day of the NCAA Championships at the Scarlet Course.

Brown's round on Wednesday's included a one-under-par 35 on the back nine, as she posted two birdies and six pars to go along with just one bogey over the final nine holes.  The Meridian, Idaho, native jumped 17 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 29th place at 150 (74-76) through two rounds.

"Elli (Brown) just played solid golf all day," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "She was very steady.  She hit the fairways and the greens.  It was nothing spectacular, just good, solid golf."

Senior Stephanie Ruiz, added a solid round of 76 to her first-round score of 72 to remain in contention for a top-10 individual finish at the halfway mark of the four-day tournament. The second-team All-Big 12 selection is in a tie for 15th at 148 through 36 holes in the 72-hole tournament on the par-72, 6,203-yard Scarlet Course.

Elizabeth Bahensky was the only Husker to have ever finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships in school history.  In 2000, Bahensky finished in a tie for 25th with the best score at the NCAA Championships in school history with 301 (79-78-68-76) at the Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore., May 24-27.

Nebraska also received solid rounds from senior Sara Sackett (77) and junior Chrissie McArdle (78). Sackett climbed 18 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 97th place at 158, while McArdle moved up six spots into a tie for 110th.

The Huskers' 305 team total was six shots better than their first-round 311, putting them in sole possession of 22nd place at 616, just seven strokes out of 14th place in the 24-team field.

The Huskers are three strokes ahead of 23rd-place Kent State (619) and eight shots ahead of 24th-place Alabama. Nebraska is well within striking distance of its best NCAA Championships finish in school history, which came with the Huskers' 19th-place showing in 2000.

"We feel pretty good about our score today," said Krapfl. "We are getting to know the course better and get a feel for the greens.  Our chips and putts were a lot better and we eliminated some of the mistakes from yesterday."

Arizona State took over the lead in the tournament on the second day. The Sun Devils posted a six-over-par 294, after opening the tournament with a 292 on Tuesday. ASU's two-round total of 586 is three strokes ahead of second-place Duke (589), which notched the second-best round of the day with a four-over 292.

USC, which led the tournament after firing a 291 on Tuesday, slipped to third at 591, five strokes off the pace, after managing a 300 on Wednesday. Tennessee, which shot Wednesday's best round with a two-over-par 290, vaulted into fourth place at 593.
