Bryan, Texas - The Nebraska women's golf team fired Friday's best round with a 10-over-par 298 to leap from 10th to fourth after two rounds of the NCAA Central Regional at the Traditions Club. The top eight teams in the tournament, which concludes Saturday, will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, May 23-26.
The Huskers, who were seeded 15th in the 21-team field Central Regional field entering the tournament, began the second day of the tournament after producing a solid 313 in Thursday's opening round.
But after playing in the afternoon groupings on Thursday, the Huskers got to tee off in prime scoring conditions on Friday morning and made the most of their opportunity by scorching the 6,289-yard, par-72 layout of the Traditions Club with Friday's lowest round.
Sophomore Allison Stewart led Friday's charge up the team leaderboard for the Huskers by firing a career-low, two-under-par 70 in the second round. She surpassed her previous career-best score of 71 shot in the first round of the 2006 Mountain View Collegiate. The Vermillion, S.D., native, who opened the tournament with a 79 Thursday, vaulted from a tie for 45th to a tie for ninth heading into Saturday's final 18 holes at 149.
"Today's round was really fun to watch, especially Allison’s (Stewart) round," Nebraska Head Coach Robin Krapfl said. "She has worked so hard to get to this point, so it is nice to see players who put in the time and effort see it pay off."
Through two rounds, Nebraska's 611 (313-298) and fourth-place standing leads a strong contingent of Big 12 Conference schools in the NCAA Central Regional, including a 13-stroke lead over Big 12 Champion and tournament-host Texas A&M.
No. 1 Duke took over the top spot on the leaderboard after posting a 300 in the second round to close the day at 594 (300-294),three strokes ahead of first-round leader USC (293-304-597).
Pepperdine (303-304-607) sits just four strokes ahead of the Huskers in third place. Nebraska is two strokes ahead of fifth-place Florida (301-312-613) and five strokes in front of sixth-place Northwestern (308-308-616). With the top eight teams in NCAA Central Regional field advancing to the NCAA Championships, Nebraska is 10 strokes ahead of ninth-place Texas (621) and 13 strokes ahead of 10th-place Texas A&M (624), giving the Huskers some breathing room heading into Saturday's final round.
Although Nebraska appears poised to make its third NCAA Championships appearance in school history and first since 2003, Krapfl said the Huskers know they have to continue to play great golf on Saturday.
"We are very excited, but we realize the work isn’t done," Krapfl said. "We celebrated this score today and now it's about coming out tomorrow and doing the same thing. The key is not to protect what we have but to move up in the standings tomorrow."
All five of Nebraska's golfers at the regional produced strong rounds on Friday. Junior Chrissie McArdle enters the final round in a tie for 19th place individually at 152 after notching a 75 in the second round.
Senior Stephanie Ruiz, a second-team All-Big 12 selection this season and NU's No. 1 golfer at the tournament, sits in a tie for 29th at 154 after putting together a solid 76 on Friday, giving the Huskers three golfers in the top 30 among the 106 players in the tournament.
Sophomore Elli Brown and senior Sara Sackett both shot 77 in the second round. Brown sits in a tie for 42nd at 156, while Sackett enters the final round tied in 45th at 157.
Nebraska will compete in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday morning with live scoring available on golfstat.com.
