Huskers in 10th at NCAA Regional

Bryan, Texas - The Nebraska women's golf team closed the first day of competition at the NCAA Central Regional in 10th place among the 21 teams in the field. The Huskers, the tournament's No. 15 seed, shot an opening-round 313 on the 6,289-yard, par-72 layout at the Traditions Club on Thursday.

The top eight teams in each of the three NCAA Regional tournaments will advance to the NCAA Championships at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, May 23-26. The Huskers put themselves in the hunt for one of the coveted top eight spots by playing solid golf on Thursday, according to Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl.

"I am very pleased with where we are at and the way we played on the first day of the tournament, especially considering we played in tougher conditions in the afternoon than the morning groups had to contend with," Krapfl said. "Tomorrow, we hope those conditions will be reversed because we will be in one of the earlier groups in the morning, hopefully before the wind picks up like it did today."

USC closed the first day of competition at the top of the team leaderboard by posting a five-over par 293, one stroke ahead of No. 1 Duke, which managed a 294.

Florida (301), Pepperdine (303), Michigan State (306), Northwestern (308), Ohio State (309) and Kent State (309) rounded out the top eight teams at the conclusion of the first 18 holes, leaving Nebraska just four strokes out of eighth place.

Nebraska's 313 was the second-best score posted by a Big 12 Conference school in the Central Regional on Thursday, trailing only the 311 fired by Texas, which enters the second round in ninth place. The Huskers finished the first day of competition ahead of Big 12 runner-up Oklahoma State (314), Big 12 champion and tournament host Texas A&M (318), Baylor (318) and Missouri (320).

"I think we are in a very good position right now, entering the second day of the tournament," Krapfl said. "We are certainly encouraged by the way we played, but at the same time we know we can play better and make some more shots tomorrow. We played solid golf throughout the day, and we expect that to continue through the rest of the tournament."

Junior Chrissie McArdle produced the top round of the day for the Huskers with her five-over-par 77 to position herself in a tie for 30th. Senior Stephanie Ruiz, a second-team All-Big 12 selection during the season, enters the second round in a tie for 39th after firing a six-over-par 78.

Sophomores Elli Brown and Allison Stewart each contributed rounds of 79 to enter Friday's round in a tie for 45th among the 106 players in the individual tournament field.

Nebraska will compete in the second round of the NCAA Central Regional on Friday morning with live scoring available on golfstat.com.
