DeBuhr Dominant in Huskers' 2-0 Win

Junior right-hander Ashley DeBuhr picked up her fifth shutout in her last seven starts and senior Trisha Tannahill scored two runs in her final regular-season game in her home state as the 19th-ranked Nebraska softball team posted a 2-0 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

The win was Nebraska's fifth straight and the Huskers' fourth straight victory in Lawrence. NU improved its record to 25-6 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference with the victory, while Kansas dropped to 18-18 and 1-4.

DeBuhr (12-5) held a powerful Kansas lineup to just four hits, including a pair of infield singles. She also walked just one while striking out 11.

DeBuhr's performance was needed as Nebraska was held hitless in the game by KU starter and reigning Big 12 pitcher of the week Kassie Humphreys. Although the Huskers were unable to record a hit against Humphreys, NU made the most of its opportunities that included three walks, a hit batter, one error, two wild pitches and two passed balls.

Tannahill, a native of Overland Park, Kan., came home on a passed ball and a wild pitch to account for the Huskers' runs.

Humphreys (7-12) was the hard-luck loser, tossing a no-hitter and allowing two unearned runs, while striking out 10. It was the second straight hard-luck decision for Humphreys, who threw seven innings of no-hit ball on Saturday, but a lone hit in the eighth combined with a Jayhawk error lifted Oklahoma State to a 1-0 win.

Nebraska plated a run in the top of the second inning, aided by a hit batter and a wild pitch. Tannahill was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a ground out by senior KoKo Tacha. Tannahill then moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored when junior Devin Porter struck out swinging, but reached first safely on a passed ball.

Kansas threatened in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and second for the heart of its order that includes Serena Settlemeier and Destiny Frankenstein, who rank 1-2 in the Big 12 in home runs this season. Heather Stanley reached on an infield single when her slap ricocheted off the glove of NU third baseman Carmen Kier. Nettie Fierros then laid down a bunt and Nebraska attempted to get Stanley at second, but Porter was unable to handle the throw and was credited with an error.

With two on, DeBuhr struck out Frankenstein and Settlemier, before losing an eight-pitch battle to walk Jessica Moppin and load the bases. DeBuhr quickly responded by striking out Val Chapple to end the inning.

Tannahill came home with the second run of the game in the top of the seventh to give the Huskers an added insurance run. She reached base on an error to lead off the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Nebraska returns to the road this weekend when the Huskers travel to Stillwater, Okla., for a two-game series with Oklahoma State beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
