Nebraska Defeats Seventh Ranked Team of Season

Stillwater, Okla.?The No. 42 Nebraska women’s tennis team defeated No. 47 Oklahoma State in a tight 4-3 match Sunday, April 16, in Stillwater, Okla.  The win over the Cowgirls marked the seventh ranked team the Huskers have defeated this year as NU improved to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

The Huskers started slowly today as they dropped the doubles point.  But senior Milena Schulz-Gartner and freshman Kim Hartmann gave the Big Red momentum going into singles by taking the final doubles match, 8-6, over Iryna Tkachenko and Marta Tsivka at No. 2.

Nebraska took control of the match by grabbing the first set in five of six matches.  Hartmann rolled over Tkachenko at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1, and senior Pamela Castillejos gave the Huskers the lead in the match when she defeated Yawna Allen, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4.  Sophomore Imke Reimers pulled out a close first set at No. 2 over Lauren Simmons, 7-5, and never looked back, taking the second set in style, 6-1.

Freshman Vanessa Heute clinched the victory for the Big Red with a three-set thriller at No. 6.  Heute fell in the first set, 6-3, but rallied to take the final two sets, 6-0, 6-2, to extend her winning streak to eight matches.  Since moving to the No. 6 spot, Heute is 8-0.

“It was hard to battle back after the loss to Oklahoma, so I was proud of our effort today,” coach Scott Jacobson said.  “It was as complete an effort as we have had since the Texas A&M match.  We competed hard all across the board.”

The Huskers return to Lincoln for the final two matches of the season as NU plays host to IowaState on Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m., and faces No. 59 Kansas State on Sunday, April 23, at noon in the final match of the regular season.  The location of the matches in Lincoln will be determined by the weather.
