Norman, Okla.?The No. 42 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Oklahoma, 4-3, Saturday, April 15, in Norman Okla. With the loss, the Huskers’ record drops to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in conference.
The Sooners jumped out early in the match by taking the doubles point and never looked back. Anne Carter and Monica Purice gave the Sooners’ doubles momentum as they made quick work of senior Pamela Castillejos and freshman Vanessa Heute, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot. Gabby Baker and Chelsea Orr clinched the doubles point as they defeated senior Ewelina Skaza and sophomore Imke Reimers in a close match at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
Heute extended her seven-match winning streak in singles play by topping Carter in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. Heute is now 7-0 at the No. 6 spot. Senior Milena Schulz-Gartner bounced back from a first set loss to Purice, 6-2, to take the second set, 6-3, at No. 3. The experienced senior pulled out a tight third set, 7-6 (5), to give the Huskers their second point of the match.
Reimers, who was playing at No. 2, rallied after falling behind to Irina Lykina, 6-2, to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Reimers victory gave her a team-high 20 wins this season.
Christi Baxley defeated Castillejos at No. 4 in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to clinch the 4-3 upset for the Sooners.
The Sooners improve to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Nebraska finishes its road stretch Sunday, April 16, when it faces No. 47 Oklahoma State at 11a.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
