The Audrey Walton Combined Events concluded Friday in Columbia, Mo., with seven Huskers completing multi-event competitions. Sara Jane Baker led Nebraska with a third-place finish in the women’s heptathlon.
Baker tallied 5,175 points to finish behind Missouri State’s Tracy Partain (5,649) and the unattached Fiona Asigbee (5,481). The senior Husker posted individual event marks of 17-6 in the long jump, 115-11 in the javelin and 2:17.39 in the 800-meter run to complete her second heptathlon of the outdoor season. Also competing for NU was redshirt freshman Kim Shubert, who recorded 4,666 points to earn 10th place.
Sophomore Ben Schutter rebounded from his 12th-place overall standing following Friday’s competition to finish seventh in the men’s decathlon with a personal-best score of 6,707. Junior Lee Martin placed just behind Schutter in eighth with 6,605 points. Boosting Martin’s score was a career-best time of 15.73 in the 110-meter hurdles that helped him move up the standings after finishing day one in 11th. Redshirt freshmen Skyler Reising (6,488) and Patrick Burke (5,861) each successfully completed the decathlon by finishing 11th and 13th, respectively, while junior Corlan Vonderschmidt finished 14th.
A much larger group of Huskers compete in their first and only home outdoor meet of the season Saturday, as NU hosts the Nebraska Invitational at Ed Weir Stadium. Competition begins with field events at 11 a.m., while track events start at Noon. Admission to the meet is free.
