No. 53 Nebraska Upsets No. 43 Colorado

Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 53 Nebraska women’s tennis team closed out the weekend in style as it upset No. 43 Colorado, 4-3, Sunday, March 12, at the WoodsTennisCenter.  With the win, NU improved to 9-3 on the year and 2-2 in the conference.

“It was a great team effort today,” said coach Scott Jacobson.  “It took a lot of courage.  It takes everyone every day working together to accomplish our goals as a team.”

Senior Pamela Castillejos and sophomore Imke Reimers cruised to their fifth straight victory of the season as they defeated CU’s Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrain at the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-3.  After NU fell at No. 1 doubles, the point came down to the match at the No. 3 spot.  Sophomore Ellinor Zugner and senior Ewelina Skaza battled back from a 6-2 deficit to make it 6-6, but came up short against Ewa Losinski and Jenny Hanson, 8-6.

The Huskers entered singles play needing to take four out of six matches for the victory.

No. 63 Kim Hartmann, who played at No. 1 singles, dominated CU’s Jessica Vanderdys, 6-3, 6-0, while Milena Schulz-Gartner recorded her second victory at the No. 3 spot, making quick work of Losinski, 6-1, 6-1.  The win by Schulz-Gartner marked her fifth victory in seven matches.

Late-match heroics by Skaza and Castillejos clinched the victory for the Huskers, as each posted three-match wins.  Skaza fell behind early at the No. 6 spot, 0-6, but fought through the pain of a nagging abdominal injury to take the last two sets, 6-2, 7-5.  With the match score tied, 3-3, all eyes were on the No. 5 match between Castillejos and Jendrain. Castillejos rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the third set to win a tight match, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

“Once Castillejos took the match to 5-5 in the third set, she cruised from there on out,” Jacobson said.

The Huskers hit the road this week and head to Irvine, Calif., where they will face No. 59 UC-Irvine on Wednesday, March 15, at 1:30 p.m.
