Waco, Texas? The No. 43 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to No. 16 Baylor, 6-1, Saturday in Waco, Texas. With the loss, NU’s record dropped to 7-3 and 1-2 in the conference.
The Huskers were up against one of the most talented teams in the conference. With the Bears having four players ranked in singles play, the doubles point was increasingly important for the Big Red. NU fell 8-4 at both the Nos. 1 and 3 slots, but freshman Kim Hartmann and senior Milena Schulz-Gartner rallied to send the match into a tie-breaker at the No. 2 slot. After dropping the first point of the tie-breaker, the Husker duo won four straight points and eventually won the match, 8-7 (7-3).
No. 16 Zuzana Cerna of Baylor was looking to avenge her loss last season to sophomore Imke Reimers. In a matchup featuring two ranked players, Cerna defeated Reimers, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Pamela Castillejos fought in a three-set match against Baylor's Iva Maihaylova to put the Huskers on the board. After dropping the first set, 5-7, the team captain battled back and sent the match into a super-breaker by winning the second set, 6-4. Castillejos started strong by jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the super-breaker and held off a late rally from Maihaylova to win the match, 11-9.
“Pamela Castillejos was the highlight of the day for us,” coach Scott Jacobson said. “She just competed very hard."
Nebraska returns to the WoodsTennisCenter for two important matches starting on Saturday, March 11, when it faces WichitaState at 10 a.m. It closes out the weekend with No. 45 Colorado on Sunday, March 12, at 10 a.m.
“We need to regroup and come out and compete, maintain our sense of confidence and give it our all next weekend against WichitaState and Colorado,” Jacobson said.
