Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 36 Nebraska women’s tennis team dominated MissouriState, 7-0, Friday, Feb. 24, at the WoodsTennisCenter. With the win, the Huskers improve to 7-1 and extend their home non-conference winning streak to 69 matches.
NU jumped out of the gates quickly taking two doubles matches and never looked back. At the No. 1 slot, sophomore Imke Reimers, who is ranked No. 100 nationally in singles play, and senior Pamela Castillejos got the Huskers off on the right foot rolling MSU’s Liz Garza and Nora Kuruc, 8-1. Senior Milena Schulz-Gartner and freshman Kim Hartmann built off of Reimers’ and Castillejos’ momentum defeating Maja Stanojevic and Monika Mosilova, 8-2.
“We got off to a quick start and set the tone early with doubles,” coach Scott Jacobson said. “We played with great intensity and are getting more comfortable especially in doubles.”
After the doubles matches, Nebraska kept the pressure on MissouriState and never let up on the singles courts. Hartmann blanked Garza at the No. 1 slot, 6-0, 6-0. Hartmann’s win marks her second 6-0, 6-0 victory of her career.
The match of the day took place at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Vanessa Heute was out to regain her form from the fall, where she went 4-1. Three of her last four matches have gone into three-sets, and today’s was no exception. Heute came out of the gates quickly, taking the first set, 6-3, but fell in the second set, 4-6, to Maja Stanojevic. The match went to a super-breaker, where Heute pulled out a close match, 11-9.
“I was really happy with how she played during the super-breaker,” Jacobson said. “I am happy to see her pull out a close match. She showed great composure today.”
Nebraska hits the court next on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m. when it faces No. 48 Iowa at the WoodsTennisCenter.
