Columbia, Mo.?The No. 36 Nebraska women’s tennis team tamed the Missouri Tigers, 5-2, Saturday in Columbia, Mo. The win marks NU’s first conference victory and improves its record to 6-1 and 1-1 in the Big 12.
The Huskers set the tone early by taking the doubles point. At the No. 3 spot, senior Pamela Castillejos and sophomore Ellinor Zugner battled through a close match and came out on top over MU’s Erika Josbena and Amanda Pratzel, 8-6.
Nebraska continues to have success at the top of the singles lineup. Freshman Kim Hartmann, who is ranked No. 36 nationally, defeated Hana Kraftova in a tight first set, 6-4, and never looked back. Hartmann carried the momentum over to the second set, dominating Kraftova, 6-2. This victory snaps a four-match winning streak for Kaftova, including a win over No. 73 Gabby Baker of Oklahoma last weekend. Sophomore Imke Reimers, in her second match this spring at the No. 2 spot, took little time in downing Valeria Dandik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Milena Schulz-Gartner overcame recent struggles on the court to take down Erika Josbena, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles spot.
“I was really proud of their effort today,” Assistant coach Hayden Perez said. “Kim Hartmann showed a lot of heart. Imke Reimers and Milena Schulz-Gartner came out today on fire and just took care of business.”
Nebraska returns to the WoodsTennisCenter Friday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m. when it plays host to MissouriState.
