Stone Wins All-Around at Penn State

State College, Pa. ? Freshman Kylie Stone captured the first two individual event titles of her career Friday night to lead the No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team to a 195.475 on its way to a second-place finish behind No. 17 Penn State (196.025) Friday night at PSU’s Rec Hall. The Huskers, who moved to 8-3-1 on the season, scored 49.0 or better on vault and floor exercise to finish ahead of Rutgers (190.55) and Yale (190.20).

 

Stone, who competed on all four events for just the second time in her career, claimed the all-around crown with a score of 39.25. She also won the floor exercise title with a season-high 9.90. The Calgary, Alberta, native added a third-place finish on bars (9.80) and a fourth-place showing on beam (9.75), while finishing 11th on vault (9.80).

 

“I am so proud of Kylie Stone tonight,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “She showed tremendous improvement on every event, and lived up to our expectations of a solid 9.90 floor routine. Kylie is becoming more confident as the season continues, and she will continue to be a huge contributor to our team’s success this year.”

 

Sophomore Emily Parsons also tied with Stone for first place on floor while earning a fifth-place finish in the all-around with a mark of 38.60. Parsons earned a 9.85 on vault to place sixth.

 

Husker sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski claimed her first balance beam title of the season with a solid 9.85.

 

NU began the competition on the floor exercise, where Stone and Parsons set the pace with matching scores of 9.90 to tie for the event title. Sniatynski posted a 9.875 to place fourth and tie her career best set in 2005 against Minnesota and Air Force on March 6. Junior Stephanie Carter followed with a mark of 9.80 for ninth, while freshman Sabrina Long added a 13th-place finish (9.70). Nebraska finished the event with a team score of 49.175 to stand in second place behind PennState, as the Nittany Lions notched a 49.425 on vault.

 

The Huskers then responded with a season-high 49.275 on vault, led by Tricia Woo’s third-place 9.90, which set a career high for the freshman. Carter earned a 9.875 to take home fifth-place honors, while Long scored a career-best 9.85 to tie with Parsons for sixth. Stone and Zabawa tied for 11th at 9.80 to give NU a 98.45 lead over PennState (98.10), Rutgers (95.65) and Yale (93.525) at the halfway point.

 

Nebraska moved on to the uneven bars for its third event of the dual, where Stone led the team with a strong 9.80 to place third and tie her career best. Zabawa posted a mark of 9.775 to finish fourth, and Sniatynski and Brittney Williams followed in fifth place by scoring a pair of 9.75s. Parsons contributed a score of 9.625. The Huskers finished at 48.70 for the event and continued to lead the competition heading into their final event on balance beam.

 

Sniatynski produced a solid 9.85 to tie her career high and capture the event title on the beam. Stone, Carter and Zabawa landed in a three-way tie for fourth with scores of 9.75. The Huskers were forced to count a 9.225 by Parsons, as Woo finished with a 9.10, and Nebraska put together a score of 48.325 to claim second overall in the competition.

 

“Rec Hall is a tough place to compete, but we had some very encouraging routines tonight,” Kendig said. “We accomplished a lot of team and individual goals but had some trouble finishing. It’s tough to win on the road, but we’re looking forward to getting back in the gym this week. Our team is definitely doing the right things and has a great attitude. Carrying that into competition to finish what we start on each event will be key going into IowaState next weekend.”

 

The Huskers will wrap up a three-week road stretch by traveling to Ames, Iowa, to take on No. 9 Iowa State, Sunday, Feb. 19, at ISU’s Hilton Coliseum. Gymnastics competition, alongside the Nebraska-IowaState wrestling match, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
