Huskers Put Out Flames

Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 38 Nebraska women’s tennis team closed out the opening weekend of the season Sunday in style, as it defeated Illinois-Chicago, 6-1, at the WoodsTennisCenter.  NU improved its record to 2-0 on the season and extended its home non-conference winning streak to 65 matches.

“It was a great team effort,” coach Scott Jacobson said.  “It was good to get the jitters out and gain confidence.  We are taking a step in the right direction.”

Freshman Kim Hartmann continued to dominate at the No. 1 singles spot as she blanked Callan Smith, 6-0, 6-0.  During the weekend, Hartmann, who is ranked No. 36 nationally, only dropped one game as she cruised to 2-0 on the season.

“We have a real monster at No. 1 with Hartmann,” Jacobson said.  “She shows great leadership on the court.”

In the match of the day, freshman Vanessa Heute faced UIC’s Corey Smith.  Heute captured the first set, 6-2, but in the second set Heute showed signs of being effected by a nagging ankle injury.  The freshman from Germany fought through the pain and pulled out a close second set, 7-5.  The win marked Heute’s first spring victory as a Husker.

In doubles action, sophomore Imke Reimers and senior Pamela Castillejos recorded their first victory together as they defeated Corey Steven and Callan Smith, 8-5, at the No. 1 slot.

The Huskers return to the court on Friday, Feb. 3, as they play host to the Air Force Falcons at 4 p.m. at the WoodstennisCenter.
