Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 38 Nebraska women’s tennis team opened the 2006 season Friday by defeating Colorado State, 5-2. The victory over the Rams extends NU’s home non-conference winning streak to 64.
In doubles play, freshman Kim Hartmann and senior Milena Schulz-Gartner recorded their first doubles victory when they rolled over CSU’s Jasmin Singh and Lauren Strasburger at the No. 2 slot, 8-1. Sophomore Ellinor Zugner and senior Jennifer Cremieux bounced back from a 7-4 deficit and defeated Jessica Jones and Greer Satherlie, 9-7. This clinched the doubles point for the Huskers.
In singles play, Hartmann, ranked No. 36 nationally, proved her ranking was well deserved as she dominated Emily Kirchem, who has been ranked as high as No. 120 nationally, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles slot. At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Imke Reimers, who won four-straight matches to win the ITA Central Regional Consolation Tournament, carried the momentum over from the fall to defeat Strasburger, 6-4, 6-4.
Head Coach Scott Jacobson said Nebraska overcame an injury to Vanessa Heute and missed Ewelina Skaza due to an illness but showed heart throughout the match.
“We played with great determination today,” Jacobson said. “It was a great day, and I think we will continue to get stronger as a team.”
The Huskers return to the courts Sunday, Jan. 29, when they take on Illinois-Chicago at 10 a.m. at the WoodsTennisCenter
