No. 1 Huskers Sweep No. 23 Wildcats, 3-0

Manhattan, Kan. ? Behind a season-high 18 kills from All-American Sarah Pavan, No. 1 Nebraska rolled to a 30-20, 30-17, 30-18 sweep of No. 23 Kansas State  in front of a season-high crowd of 3,107 at Ahean Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Pavan matched her season-high with 18 kills originally set at Missouri on Oct. 5, as the Huskers (19-0, 10-0 Big 12) hit .422, their second-best offensive night of the season and their highest hitting percentage in Big 12 play in over two years.  Pavan, who hit .406 on 32 swings, also chipped in six block and six digs, as the Huskers posted their 33rd straight Big 12 victory.

“I think we did a solid job,” Nebraska Head Coach John Cook said. “We followed our game plan well, and our setters did a very nice job of running the offense tonight.”

Pavan was one of four Huskers who recorded at least eight kills in the victory. Christina Houghtelling finished with 14 kills on .462 hitting while Melissa Elmer and Jordan Larson totaled nine and eight kills, respectively. Elmer, who has reached double figures in blocks six times, totaled 10 stuffs, as NU enjoyed a 14-6 edge in blocks.

Jennifer Saleaumua also shined in the sweep with 22 digs, her second-highest output of the season, as NU enjoyed a 54-35 lead in digs, while holding KSU to .106 hitting. Saleamua’s 22 digs was her highest total in a three-game match of her career.

The Huskers came out firing in game one, hitting .394 as a team in rolling to a 30-20 victory. Pavan had six kills and three blocks for the Huskers while Elmer had five stuffs and four kills as NU held the hosts to .083 hittting. Kansas State led 10-8 before the Huskers used a 5-1 spurt to take a 13-11 lead after a stuff block by Pavan and Elmer that forced a KSU timeout.  KSU was within 19-16 before a trio of Wildcat errors gave the Huskers a 22-16 lead. The Wildcats pulled with in 22-18 before Elmer took over, recording two kills and two blocks in a 6-1 spurt, as NU took a commanding 28-19 lead and closed out game one with a Saleamua kill moments later.

The Huskers showed a more balanced attack in game two as NU used an 11-2 run to close out a 30-17 victory. Four Huskers had at least three kills, as the Huskers hit a blistering .441 with only three attack errors. The Huskers led 9-8 before Tracy Stalls’ kill triggered a 5-2 spurt, as NU pushed the lead to 14-10 on a Pavan kill. KSU whittled the lead to 19-15 before Stalls ignited a 7-1 run that gave the visitors a comfortable 26-16 margin.

In the finale, Nebraska jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back in a 30-18 victory. The Huskers, who hit .429 in game three, built a 14-5 lead, only to see the hosts use a 5-1 spurt to pull within 15-10 and get the crowd back into the match. KSU trimmed the NU lead to five points two other times, the last being at 17-12, but NU scored three straight points to take a 20-12 lead on a Houghtelling kill, ending KSU’s best hopes for the upset.

Agata Rezende led KSU (15-5, 5-4 Big 12) with 13 kills, as no other Wildcat reached double figures.

The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Oct 26, when they host Kansas. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln.
