Manhattan, Kan. - Senior Stephanie Ruiz fired a school-record five-under-par 67 to help the Nebraska women's golf team tie the mark for the best round in school history with a 285 in the second round of the Marilyn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., on Monday. Through 36 holes of the 54-hole event, Ruiz owned the individual lead in the tournament at 140 (four-under par), while the Huskers occupied second-place in the 12-team field.
Nebraska finished the day by tying the school for the best score through 36 holes at 582, after opening the tournament with a 297 in the first round. The Huskers trail Texas Christian by 12 strokes after the Horned Frogs closed the day at 570 (287-283) at the Colbert Hills Golf Course. Ruiz is leading the tournament with a four-under-par score of 140 (73-67), one shot ahead of TCU's Camille Blackery.
Ruiz, a senior from Edmond, Okla., started her record-breaking second round on Hole No. 4, where she chipped in for eagle to get her second 18 holes of the day off on the right foot. She produced five consecutive pars on the next five holes and avoided early trouble at No. 10 to stay 2-under par. Ruiz then birdied her next three holes and added a birdie on No. 16 and another birdie on No. 18 to head to No. 1 at 6-under par. She got into more trouble on No. 2, but managed to sink a long putt to save a bogey. She closed the round with pars on No. 2 and No. 3 to finish her record-breaking round.
Ruiz broke the record (68) originally set by Amy Roux on Oct. 13, 1998, at the Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout at the Legends' Challenge (first round) in Franklin, Ind., and tied by Elizabeth Bahensky in the third round of the 2000 NCAA Championships in Sunriver, Ore.
"It feels great to play the kind of golf I have been playing so far," Ruiz said. "Especially shooting a school record today and being in first place. I have worked really hard to get where I am with my game right now, and I have really put in a lot of time. It is really paying off for me now in my senior year."'
Ruiz owns two top-five finishes in Nebraska's first two tournaments of the fall season and will be shooting for her third straight top-five performance during Tuesday's final round in Manhattan. Ruiz has produced a 72.5 stroke average over eight rounds this season. At the 2005 Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, Ruiz set her previous personal-best round of 69, finishing the tournament in a tie for fifth place.
The Huskers tied the school record set at the 1998 Chip-N Club Invitational on Sept. 14. NU finished the first two rounds 13 strokes ahead of the hosts from Kansas State, who finished the first day at 595.
Elli Brown produced Nebraska's second-best score with a 143 (72-71). The sophomore from Edmond, Okla., is tied for fourth place heading into the tomorrow's final round, which is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Junior Chrissie McArdle shot a 149 (74-75) on the day, finishing the first 36 holes in a tie for 13th place, while senior Sara Sackett hit a 150 (78-72) to tie for 15th. Jackie Beste sits in 49th after recording a 161 (85-76).
Redshirt freshman Megan Place competed as an individual for NU, producing a career-best 75 in the second round, after opening the tournament with a 76 over the first 18 holes.
Head Coach Robin Krapfl was proud of the effort her team gave and hopes to accomplish even more in the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
"We had a good day," Krapfl said. "They just played great. What I'm most excited about is that we played 36 holes today, and we finished stronger that we started across the board. All of the players put together really strong second rounds."
