Huskers Split First Day of Matches at HEB Championship

Corpus Christi, Texas --- The No. 70 Nebraska men’s tennis team split a pair of matches Friday at the 37th Annual HEB Collegiate Championships at the HEBTennisCenter. NU opened the tournament with a 4-3 victory over Texas-Arlington before dropping a tough 4-0 loss to No. 42 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 

 

 

The Huskers’ earned a solid victory over UTA to pick up their seventh dual match win of the season. The Huskers earned the doubles point for the fourth straight match as the tandem of Joel Reckewey and Jerry Posch cruised to an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 slot. Nebraska earned the point as Adrian Szatmary and James Clow earned an 8-6 win at the No. 3 slot, their fourth straight victory together.

 

In singles action, the Huskers earned points at the Nos. 2 and 6 slots in straight sets. Clow moved to 9-2 in dual-meet action on the season as he won at the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 6-4, over Neils Buksik while Jose Rivera picked up his team-leading 11th singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Felipe Acosta at the No. 6 slot.

 

After UTA picked up three singles points, the Huskers put the lid on the victory with a three-set victory at the No. 1 slot. Jerry Posch earned his fifth win at the top spot this season with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, win over Sandy Farguharson.

 

In Nebraska’s late match, the Huskers were swept by the Islanders, the third ranked team NU has faced this season. After TAMUCC swept the doubles point, Clow dropped his first career match at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-4, against Jeremy Blanton. Posch then slipped at the No. 2 slot, the first time this season he has not been at the leadoff position, and the Islanders locked up the win with a victory by TAMUCC’s Goncalo Figuerido over Rivera, 6-2, 6-2.
