Huskers Down Jayhawks in Big 12 Opener

Lincoln, Neb. - Three Huskers won two events apiece and Nebraska took the top three spots in five events to down the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday 180-120 at the Devaney Center Pool.

Junior Amie Buoy swept the diving competitions in the first conference meet of the season, earning top scores of 269.10 (one-meter) and 290.62 (three-meter).  Buoy was just one of the many Husker divers who performed well on the day, much to the pleasure of diving coach Jeff DiNicola.

"Amie dove out of her mind with those great scores," said DiNicola.  "Overall, nobody dove bad today.  The team's attitude and effort is great.  I am looking forward to the next couple meets to get these women qualified (for zone) and really make a showing at the Big 12 Championships."

Junior Becky Johnson also made a large contribution on the boards, placing second in the one-meter (238.04) and third in the three-meter (244.04).

After the Huskers won the 200-yard medley relay to begin the day, sophomore Lauren Bailey won her first of two races to begin a successful day for the NU swimmers.  Bailey swam a time of 10:03.79 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and was followed by junior Mackenzie Clark, who placed second with a career-best time of 10:09.31.  Bailey also earned a career best in the 200-yard IM, edging out sophomore Bailey Ingles in 2:08.33.

Sophomore Kate Wheeler added to her team-leading win total with victories in the 200-yard free (1:51.64) and 500-yard free (4:55.33).  Wheeler now has 12 wins this season, and missed an NCAA provisional mark by one second in the 200-yard free.

"The meet was great," said Wheeler.  "I am really happy because the whole team stepped up.  I just want to do what I need to do to help the team."

Besty Grover rounded out the victories for the Huskers with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.  The freshman from Sioux City, Iowa set a career-best mark with a time of 2:04.98, topping her previous best by two seconds.

After wrapping up the first conference competition of the season, the Huskers travel to Omaha on Jan. 28 to take on Nebraska-Omaha and Northern Colorado.  The meet is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the HPER Pool.
