LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska Development Office announced on Tuesday that senior fullback Steve Kriewald has been awarded the honorary Dave Noble Devaney Society Memorial Scholarship. An award plaque will be presented to Kriewald at a private luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 11.
The Noble Scholarship is given to a University of Nebraska varsity scholarship football student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, effective leadership skills, integrity, and a commitment to excellence in all endeavors. The Dave Noble Scholarship was established in 2003 in memory of Dave Noble, by his daughter Joanne and her husband Robert Berkshire of Omaha and was first awarded in 2003 to fullback Judd Davies. Dave was a native Nebraskan from Omaha and lettered for the Huskers in 1921-22-23 as a halfback. He passed away on Jan. 24, 1983.
A reserve fullback for the Huskers the last three years, Kriewald is NU’s starter at the position this season. A native of Scotia, Neb., and North Loup-Scotia High School, Kriewald has 213 career rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also has five receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown and five tackles as a member of NU special teams.
One of Nebraska’s top student-athletes, Kriewald graduated last May with a degree in construction management and is one of two Husker seniors competing this season as graduate students. The son of Gordan and Phyllis Kriewald, Steve has earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors three consecutive years, and has made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll seven times in his Nebraska career. Also active in community outreach activities, Kriewald has been named to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team each of the past three years. He has served as a member of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
The athletic department, as a tribute to the accomplishments of legendary coach and athletic director Bob Devaney, created the Devaney Society Endowed Scholarship Fund. This endowment program will help establish a foundation of financial support to ensure the national prominence of our athletic programs.
