Lubbock, Texas - Junior Chelsea Gehring shot a first-round 76 in her first career start in Nebraska's lineup to lead the Husker women's golf team at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational on Friday.
Gehring's 4-over-par opening round helped the Huskers produce a first-round 311 to sit in a tie for 12th with Kansas in the 18-team tournament hosted by Texas Tech University. Southern Methodist shot a sizzling 3-over-par 291 as a team to take the lead in the tournament, while Missouri fired a 7-over-par 293 to sit in second place.
Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said Gehring's round was a highlight for the Huskers.
"Chelse played good golf in her first career start as a Husker," Krapfl said. "She played well and that was good to see. Our biggest issue as a team was that really never really made any big putts. We had a lot of opportunities for birdies but we were not able to capitalize on them. Hopefully we can play a little better in our short games the rest of the way."
Senior Merynn Ito added a 5-over par 77, while redshirt freshman Allison Stewart contributed a 78 to help the Huskers. True freshman Elli Brown rounded out Nebraska's top four by managing an 80 on the par-72, 6,234-yard layout of the The Rawls Course.
Sophomore Chrissie McArdle, who is playing as an individual, fired Nebraska's top round of the day with a 3-over-par 75 to sit in a tie for 19th place.
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m, before wrapping up with the final 18 holes on Sunday.
