Huskers Breeze to Chip-N Title

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's golf team breezed to its second straight Chip-N Club Invitational title in windy conditions at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course on Monday.

The Nebraska White squad, consisting of the Huskers' sixth through 10th players in preseason qualifying, added a second-place effort 20 strokes behind NU's top squad.

The Red unit posted a third-round 325 after opening the two-day, 54-hole tournament with two rounds of 306 on Sunday to finish at 937.    The White team managed a round of 329 on Monday after rounds of 320 and 308 on Sunday to finish at 957.

"Obviously I'm happy we won.  I'm excited for the team coming in first and second," Coach Robin Krapfl said.  "I wish we would have played a little bit better today, but I think the windy conditions had a little bit to do with that."

Southwest Missouri State finished a distant third with a three-round total of 965, which included Monday's best round of 322.  North Texas slipped to fourth place with a three-round team score of 968 after shooting a 331 in the final round.  UNT's Andra Lancaster did claim individual medalist honors by finishing at 225 (74-72-79).  Lancaster held off a third-round charge from Sally Hinton of SMS, who produced Monday's top individual round of 74 to climb from eighth to second with a three-round score of 228 (75-79-74).

After that it was all Huskers, as Nebraska players claimed the third through eighth spots in the top 10, while adding two more players tied for 12th.

Allison Stewart, playing in the first tournament of her collegiate career, produced Nebraska's top finish playing in the No. 4 spot in the lineup with a 229.  The redshirt freshman from Vermillion, S.D., added a third-round score of 81 to complement rounds of 75 and 73 on Sunday.

Senior Merynn Ito fired Nebraska's top round on Monday with a 79 to finish in fourth with a 232, seven strokes off the pace.  Ito's third-round 79 was one of just three sub-80 rounds produced by the 42 golfers in the tournament on Monday.

True freshman Elli Brown, who qualified as the No. 10 golfer on the NU squad for the tournament, finished 10 strokes out of first in fifth place to lead a strong performance by the Nebraska White team.  The Meridian, Idaho, native added a round of 82 on Monday to close a stellar effort in her Husker debut.

"We had two freshmen finishing in the top five, which is very impressive," Krapfl said.  "Hopefully we can take the momentum of winning and learning to compete in some tough conditions and just keep getting better and better."

Junior Chelsea Gehring added a sixth-place individual effort for the NU Whites (79-73-84-236), while fellow junior Sara Sackett took seventh for the Reds (76-79-83-238).  Sophomore Chrissie McArdle finished one shot back of Sackett (76-80-83-239) to round out the top four performances for the NU Red squad.

Junior Jackie Beste (86-76-82-244) and redshirt freshman Heather Gutschow (81-81-82-244) added solid efforts for the NU Whites by tying for 12th place.

The Huskers will return to action Friday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, hosted by Texas Tech.  The 18-team tournament will feature six other Big 12 Conference teams, including Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma and a pair of Texas Tech teams.  The tournament tees off at 8 a.m . all three days.
