Lincoln, Neb.---Thirteen members of the cross country team were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements by being named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring semester of the 2003-04 academic year.
Senior Ann Gaffigan, (Springfield, Ill., Computer Science), junior Kayte Tranel (Hampton, Neb., Pre-Natural Sciences), sophomores Michaela Lenihan (Omaha, Neb., Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology), Kim Pancoast (Cape Girardeau, Mo., Biological Science) and freshmen Lindsey Finkner (Kearney, Neb., Clothing, Textiles and Design) and Farah Jadran (General Studies, Bloomingdale, Ill.) were all named to the honor roll for both the fall of 2003 and spring of 2004. Gaffigan, Nebraska’s female student athlete of the year was named to the honor roll eight straight semesters.
Val Zajac (Poland, Ohio, Psychology) was recognized for the first time this spring.
For the men, every runner that made the honor roll in the spring, also made the fall honor roll. Seniors Dana Carne (Omaha Neb., Biological Sciences), Kyle Doperalski (Wamego, Kan., Broadcasting), Eric Rasmussen (North Platte, Neb., Social Sciences) and Paul Wilson (Wahoo, Neb., English) along with junior Tim Williams (Laramie, Wyo., Exercise Science) and freshman Bryce Dickmeyer (Fremont, Neb., Mechanical Engineering) were honored in both semesters. Dickmeyer concluded his school year with a 4.0 spring semester. For Rasmussen and Wilson, it was their seventh time on the honor roll. Carne and Williams have been named every semester they have been enrolled at Nebraska to total six honors. Doperalski enjoyed his second and third selections.
The Nebraska men are two-time defending Herman Award winners. The Herman Award is handed out to the men’s and women’s teams that have the highest overall team GPA in the athletic department. The Husker men won in last year’s award with a team cumulative GPA of 3.330. The Husker women have won the award seven out of the 10 years it has been presented.
The Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who earned a 3.0 GPA or higher during the previous semester. Overall, Nebraska had 263 student-athletes named to the spring honor roll, including 33 who produced perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester.
