Norman, Okla. ? The No. 70 Nebraska women’s tennis team was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament with a 4-0 loss to second-seeded and 17th-ranked Texas A&M Friday night at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Huskers fell to 16-9 on the season, while A&M improved to 20-7.
NU fell behind, 1-0, after losing two of the three doubles matches. Texas A&M clinched the victory with three singles wins. Helga Vieira defeated NU’s Milena Schulz-Gartner, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Laura Walker beat the Huskers' Anna Oehme, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles match, and Anna Lubinsky defeated Katie Garcia, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
The three remaining singles matches were left unfinished after A&M clinched the victory.
The Huskers must now wait to see if they earn a bid to the 2004 NCAA Championships. The tournament begins May 14 with competition in 16 regional sites across the country. Even if Nebraska is not selected for the NCAA Tournament, the Huskers can still consider the 2004 season a success. NU produced its eighth straight winning season, and its 16 victories were its highest total since the 2001 season and represented a four-match improvement over 2003.
The Huskers’ seventh-place finish in the Big 12 was also its best since the 2001 season. Nebraska also advanced past the first round of the league tournament for the first time since 2001.
