Lincoln -- The Nebraska wrestling team handed out its year end awards and celebrated one of the best seasons in school history at the team’s season ending-banquet at the Regency Suite in the City Campus Union on Saturday, April 17. Among the awards given were: Most Valuable Wrestler to Jason Powell, Most Improved Wrestler to Matt Murray, Most Dedicated Wrestler to, Jacob Klein, Lifter of the Year to Murray and Redshirt of the Year to Jon May.
The Huskers finished the 2003-04 season with a 19-3 dual record. The Huskers took home two team titles winning the Cliff Keen Invitational and the Virginia Duals while adding a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. The Huskers also added a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Championships the school’s best finish since 1998-99. owell captured a national championship at 125 pounds, while Murray finished second and Travis Shufelt and Jacob Klein claimed seventh, each earning All-Ameican honors.
Powell was named the team’s MVP after becoming the school’s eighth national champion with a 17-2 technical fall over Kyle Ott of Illinois. The three-time All-American ended his Husker career tied for 10th all-time in career wins with 109, while placing fifth on the career dual list with 60 wins. Powell also won the 2003 Gorrarian Award which is given to the wrestler who records the most falls in the least amount of time at the NCAA Championships. Powell also received the team’s MVP last season after finishing third at the NCAA Championships.
Murray earned the team’s Most Improved Wrestler and the Lifter of the Year for the 2004 season. After losing his starting position to Dusty Spaulding before last season’s Big 12 Championships, Murray battled back this year to become an NCAA finalist. He finished second at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 5-6, while adding another second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. Murray finished the year with a 24-7 record.
The Lifter of the Year in 2003, Klein was voted by the coaches as the Most Dedicated Wrestler. The Valley Center, Kan., native earned his first All-America honor with a seventh-place finish. Klein finished the year with a 21-10 record including two pins.
May a freshman heavyweight from Hutchinson, Minn. finished his redshirt year with a 17-4 record, including eight pins. May recorded five top-three finishes including first place showings at UNO, UNK, and Great Plains Opens.
