Lincoln ?The Nebraska women's tennis team's level of intensity was raised after winning the doubles point and set the stage for singles play to defeat No. 71 Colorado, 5-2, Sunday afternoon, at the Woods Tennis Center.
"When you get the doubles point, it sets the tone for the rest of the day," Husker Coach Scott Jacobson said. "We played at a higher level after the doubles matches."
Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas) and Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Colorado's Morgan Sall and Jessica Vanderdys at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Nebraska's No. 2 tandem of juniors Gitte Ostermann (Luneburg, Germany) and Katie Garcia (Lincoln, Neb.) defeated Lynzee Kever and Kendra Strandemo, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Anne Oehme (Nykoping, Sweden) and Milena Schulz-Gartner (Kiel, Germany) completed the sweep by defeating Jenny Hanson and Martina Sedivec, 8-6.
The Huskers picked up wins from the No. 1, 2, 6 singles spots to secure the victory. Ostermann defeated Kever of Colorado, 6-3, 6-4, while Husker Schulz-Gartner was victorious over Vanderdys, 7-6, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Garcia defeated Buffaloe's Kristy Randono, 7-6, 6-1.
With victory already in the Huskers hands, Pamela Castillejos (Puebla, Mexico) added one more point for Nebraska at No. 5 singles by defeating Sall, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) for a final score of 5-2.
"It was a special day for the team," said Jacobson. "The result was special, too, because we beat a national team. It was senior day, and that added to the level of intensity. The seniors wanted to get it done for Nebraska, and the underclassmen wanted to get it done for the seniors."
Prior to the start of the match four Huskers, Rebecca Harvey (San Diego, Calif.), Leslie Harvey, Ketmayura and Oehme were honored. At the conclusion of the match, team captain Katie Garcia was presented the Husker Power Women's Tennis Lifter of the Year Award for her performance in the weight room
