Huskers Claim First Big 12 Win

Lincoln -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team claimed its first Big 12 Conference victory with a 7-0 win over Iowa State Friday night at the Cather Pound Courts. With the win, the Huskers improved to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the league. Meanwhile, the Cyclones fell to 4-4 and 0-2 in the Big 12.

After winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, the Huskers swept the singles matches. NU picked up easy wins at No. 1 singles, where Gitte Ostermann defeated Sabrina Evers, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 6 singles, where Rebecca Harvey beat Charlotte Ljungkrantz, 6-0, 6-2. Milena Schulz-Gartner and Katie Garcia also won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

The most competitive matches were at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. NU’s Anna Oehme defeated ISU’s Elizabeth Chermel, 7-6 (6), 7-5 at the No. 4 spot, and the Huskers’ Leslie Harvey beat Jill Palen, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

Nebraska returns to action Sunday, when it plays host to Saint Louis at 10 a.m. at the Woods Tennis Center.
