Fullerton, Calif. ? The 20th-ranked Nebraska softball team opened the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., with an 8-0 victory over UNLV to improve to 1-0 in its pool. Peaches James (12-4) earned the win for NU (17-9), while Jacquelyn Kerrigan (13-11) took the loss for UNLV (16-15).
James tossed a complete-game, five-inning shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out six. By not allowing an earned run, James has now thrown 37 innings without allowing an earned run.
Junior Sheena Lawrick finished the night 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs to lead the Huskers. Freshman Jamie Waldecker, a Garden Grove, Calif., native, was 2-for-3 in her first game back in her home state. Senior Nicole Trimboli finished with a team-high two runs scored and fellow senior Brittney Yolo drove in two runs for the Huskers with her first career triple.
Lawrick provided all the runs Nebraska would need with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Junior Anne Steffan led off with an infield single. Trimboli then sacrificed Steffan to second and wound up on first after an error by the third baseman. Next up was Lawrick who planted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in center to put NU up 3-0.
Nebraska tallied two more runs in the second. Sophomore Jessica Yoachim reached safely to lead off the inning when the first baseman couldn’t handle the throw from third on Yoachim’s ground ball. Senior Liz Lawhorn sacrificed her to second, before Steffan struck out for the second out of the inning. With two outs, Trimboli singled to score Yoachim. Lawrick singled to put runners on first and second for sophomore Trisha Tannahill, who delivered with a single up the middle to score Trimboli and make the score 5-0.
The Huskers closed the game out by scoring three runs to give them a five-inning victory via the eight-run rule. Waldecker led off with her second single of the day and James followed with another single. With runners on first and second, Yolo tripled down the right field line to put Nebraska up 7-0. Following a ground out by Yoachim, sophomore pinch runner KoKo Tacha scored on a wild pitch to end the game and give the Huskers the 8-0 victory.
Nebraska returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. (CST) when it takes on No. 23 Arizona State in the second of three games of pool play at the Kia Klassic.
