Lincoln - The 67th-ranked Nebraska women’s tennis team extended its non-conference winning streak to 53 straight matches with a 7-0 sweep of in-state rival Creighton (3-6) Friday at the Woods Tennis Center. NU (8-2) improved to 7-0 at home this season with the win. It was the Huskers’ seventh home win over a non-conference team in 2004.
"Everyone competed very hard," NU Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. "It was a great effort, and I felt like we did what we needed to do to get better. We played with passion and got the job done."
At No. 1 singles, Gitte Ostermann defeated Katie Chiu 6-4, 6-0. Milena Schulz-Gartner topped Megan Kowal 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot and at No. 3 singles Leslie Harvey earned a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Christy Roth. Pamela Castillejos was also victorious at the No. 4 spot, defeating Kim Cavan, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Anna Oehme blanked Deidre Senders, 6-0, 6-0. Katie Garcia made it a Nebraska sweep with her 6-3, 6-0, win over Shannon Whelan in the No. 6 match.
In doubles, the Huskers’ No. 1 team of Harvey and Rose Ketmayura defeated Creighton’s No. 1 duo of Kowal and Roth, 8-2, while Ostermann and Garcia earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles over Chiu and Cavan. At No. 3 doubles, NU ?s tandem of Oehme and Schulz-Gartner made it a perfect afternoon for Nebraska, blanking the Bluejay team of Sender and Whelan, 8-0.
Nebraska returns to Big 12 action in its next match against No. 35 Baylor on March 6, at 10 a.m. in Waco, Texas.
