Houston, Texas ? The Nebraska softball team blasted Manhattan College, 19-0, before falling to Florida, 3-1, at the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas, this afternoon.
Sophomore Summer Tobias (1-1) picked up her first victory of the year, throwing a complete game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts against Manhattan.
Against the Jaspers, NU pounded out season-highs of 19 runs and 15 hits.
Senior Peaches James (3-2) was the losing pitcher against Florida, despite striking out ten and allowing only one earned run in a complete game effort.
Nebraska vs. Florida
Nebraska got on the board quickly, taking an early 1-0 on junior Sheena Lawrick’s RBI double. NU then fell behind for the first time in the tournament, when Florida took a 2-1 lead in the third.
The run the Gators scored in the third was the first run given up by a Nebraska pitcher this weekend (19 innings pitched). When Florida tallied two hits in the first inning, it marked the first time in the tournament a team had collected more than one hit in a game against Husker pitching.
Lawrick was NU’s top hitter, reaching base twice on a double and a walk. Senior Nicole Trimboli scored the team’s only run and collected the only other hit.
James (3-2) pitched well, throwing a complete game (six innings), striking out 10 and allowing only one earned run.

Trimboli drew a leadoff walk and junior Anne Steffan moved her into scoring position with a ground out. Lawrick doubled to right center, scoring Trimboli to put NU up 1-0. On the play, Lawrick was thrown out at third attempting to stretch the double into a triple. James struck out looking to end the inning.
Third Inning
Florida
Lindsey Cameron reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An error on sophomore Jessica Yoachim allowed Mandy Schuerman to reach base safely. A throwing error by James allowed the Gators’ first run to score. An RBI single followed to put Florida up 2-1. The final run scored on an errant throw home in attempting to throw out a runner trying to score as another runner was caught between first and second.
Nebraska vs. Manhattan
The Huskers tallied season highs in hits (15) and runs (19) in their 19-0 victory over Manhattan. Tobias (1-1) picked up her first victory of the season, tossing a one-hit shutout, striking out 10. It was the third time in three games that Nebraska pitchers had allowed one hit or less.
Four Huskers had multi-hit games, led by Trimboli (3-for-5) and Yoachim (3-for-3). Trimboli had two doubles and a triple and her five RBIs tied a career high and moved her into fifth place all-time at NU.
Scoring Summary
First Inning
Nebraska exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first. Trimboli led off with a triple and junior Anne Steffan brought her home with a groundout and was safe on an error. After Steffan stole second, Lawrick followed with a walk. Following a double steal, senior Brittney Yolo grounded out to the pitcher for the first out of the inning.
Evans singled to score Steffan and Lawrick to put the Huskers up 3-0. She advanced to second on an error. After freshman Carmen Kier walked, Yoachim singled for the first of four consecutive hits. Evans scored on the play. Senior Liz Lawhorn followed with a single and junior Kira Boerkircher singled scoring Yoachim. She advanced to second on the throw home and Lawhorn advanced to third. Trimboli then earned her second extra-base hit of the inning, a double that scored Lawhorn and Boerkircher.
After the Jaspers made a pitching change, Steffan struck out. Sophomore Katie Linke pinch hit for Lawrick and singled. Trimboli scored on the play after a throwing error by the shortstop. Yolo popped up to end the inning.
Second Inning
Junior Jocelyn Evans collected her second single of the day to lead off the second. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Kier struck out, Yoachim recorded her second hit. Lawhorn drew a walk to load the bases. Boerkircher struck out for the second out of the inning. Trimboli recorded her third extra base hit of the night, a bases-clearing double that put the Huskers up 12-0. Steffan grounded out to end the inning.
Third Inning
NU scored two runs in the third to go up 14-0. Linke led off with a single. Yolo reached on a fielder’s choice and Linke was safe at second when the shortstop mishandled the grounder. Evans flew out to second and the runners tagged up. An errant throw by the center fielder allowed Linke to score and Yolo to reach third. Yolo then came home on a wild pitch. Yoachim and Lawhorn recorded back-to-back walks, before Boerkircher flied out to left to end the inning.
Fourth Inning
In her fourth at bat of the game, Trimboli flied out to center. Steffan reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a single by Linke. Yolo then drove in the Huskers 15th run of the game with a single and Linke moved up to second on the play and was replaced by sophomore KoKo Tacha. After Evans flied out to center, Kier walked to load the bases. Yoachim came through with a two run single to left to put Nebraska up 17-0. Kier scored and Yoachim advanced to third when Lawhorn reached on a fielder’s choice, then wound up at second after a throwing error on the pitcher. Yoachim tallied NU’s final run, scoring on a wild pitch. Boerkircher walked before Trimboli flied to left for the third out.
