Lincoln -- The No. 68 Nebraska women’s tennis team captured four singles victories and took the doubles point to defeat Colorado State, 5-2, in its season opener Friday night at Woods Tennis Center. With the win, the Huskers extended their home winning streak against non-conference opponents to 47.
"I think Colorado State is as strong as they been in the last five or six years," NU Coach Scott Jacobson said, "so we feel really good about this win. Our players take great pride in our streak of home wins, and they really stepped up tonight without Gitte (Ostermann)."
The Huskers (1-0) were without 19th-ranked Ostermann, who was sidelined with an injury. Newcomer Milena Schulz-Gartner stepped into the No. 1 spot in place of Ostermann and fell, 6-3, 6-4, to Dasha Zhurin. NU’s other loss was at No. 4 singles, where senior Rose Ketmayura fell in a tough match to Charity Malone, 2-6, 6-3 (10-2).
Nebraska won the rest of the singles battles, as senior Leslie Harvey defeated Emily Kirchem, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles; senior Anna Oehme defeated Carla Pallares, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles; sophomore Pamela Castillejos beat Jessica Jones, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles; and junior Katie Garcia defeated Alexandra Paganetti, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, Ketmayura and Leslie Harvey took an 8-1 win, Oehme and Schulz-Gartner won 8-6, and Garcia and sophomore Jennifer Cremieux won, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
NU continues a seven-match homestand Saturday when it takes on Montana State at 10 a.m. at Woods Tennis Center.
