Huskers Pin Down Vikings and Beavers

Lincoln -- The Nebraska wrestling team used a combined seven pins over two matches to roll to victories over Portland State (46-3) and Oregon State (33-9) in its season-opening duals at the NU Coliseum on Saturday.

Five Huskers were a perfect 2-0 on the day, highlighted by strong performances from juniors B.J. Wright, Matt Murray and sophomore B.J. Paddden.

Wright, who won the first two varsity matches of his career, pinned Portland State’s Kainoa Casco at the one minutes mark to open the day, before posting a 17-8 major decision over Oregon State’s Brian Duhrkoop.

"I thought I did pretty decent," Wright said. "I’m excited to be in the lineup now, and I’m expecting big things out of myself. I have some really high goals. I’m just glad to be a part of the team now."

Murray pinned Portland State’s Josh Carroll in 1:31, before notching a 16-4 major decision over Oregon State’s Mike Unger.

At 197 pounds, Padden produced a pair of pins with a win by fall at the 4:14 mark over Portland State’s Matt O’Conner and a pin of Oregon State’s Jed Lowe at 6:21.

Other Huskers who went 2-0 on the day were sophomore Jacob Klein and junior Travis Shufelt. Top-ranked Jason Powell added a pin of Eric Stevenson of Oregon State in 2:39.

"We wrestled hard today," Manning said. "We made mistakes, but they’re mistakes we can correct."

The Huskers return to action Friday, Nov. 21, when they played host to No. 21 Boise State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track at 7 p.m.
