Huskers Shut Out Tournament Competitors in Sunday Action

Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team rolled through a pair of shut out victories with a 7-0 win over North Dakota State before closing the Big Red Classic Tournament with a 9-0 win over Wayne State College at Bowlin Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With a pair of Sunday victories, the Huskers closed their first fall tournament with a 4-1 record. The Huskers, who only scored nine runs in three games on Saturday, scored 16 runs in 11 innings on Sunday.

Three different Huskers hit homers during the games on Sunday. In the first game, Peaches James went 2 for 2, including a home run, and gave up only two hits as Nebraska defeated North Dakota State. Jamie Waldecker and Jocelyn Evans both hit homers during the second game to help Nebraska end the game early in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

North Dakota State held the Huskers scoreless in the first game until the third inning when they exploded for four runs on four hits and two errors.

In the fourth inning, James hit a solo homer to give the Huskers a 5-0 lead. The Huskers added two more runs after James' homer in the fourth. The run support was more than enough for James, who pitched six innings for the Huskers to take the win. NDSU starter Courtney Lacock surrendered all seven Husker runs to take the loss for the Bison.

In the second game, Summer Tobias threw five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to pick up her second win of the tournament. Jessica Yoachim scored three runs to spark Nebraska's offense against Wayne State.

The Huskers play in the Utah Tournament next weekend in Salt Lake City, Sept. 19-21.
