Lincoln -- The 67th ranked women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker to Texas Tech, 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Woods Tennis Center. The loss drops Nebraska to 11-5 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12 conference. Texas Tech improves to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference play.
In singles action, Nebraska played without two of its top six singles players in Rose Ketmayura and Gitte Ostermann, who were out due to injuries. At No. 1 spot, Katarina Balan defeated Irina Tereschenko, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. No. 2 Leslie Harvey dropped her decision to Alenka Ovin, 6-1, 6-4. No. 3 Amy Frisch defeated Barbara Schrami, 6-2, 6-1. No. 5 Anna Oehme defeated Noel Ruiz, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. No. 6 Kendall Brooks ousted Stacy Tomkiewicz, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, 22nd-ranked Tereschenko and Beverly Dawson defeated Balan and L. Harvey, 8-5 at the No. 1 spot. No. 2 Rebecca Harvey and Frisch defeated Schrami and Ruiz, 8-5. No. 3 Ovin and Brooks defeated Oehme and Tomkiewicz, 9-7.
The deciding point in the match came from the No. 4 singles spot. Dawson defeated R. Harvey, 7-6, 7-5 giving the win to the Red Raiders.
Nebraska will be in action tomorrow, March 31, 2002, when they host Iowa State at the Woods Tennis Center. Doubles matches began at 10 a.m.
