Kansas State Slips Past Huskers

Manhattan, Kan. -- Kansas State's Kasey Weishaar hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Wildcats to a 4-3 victory over the Huskers, Friday afternoon in Manhattan, Kan.

Kansas State, which improved to 1-6 in the Big 12 Conference, struck out 15 Huskers on the day as starter Luke Robertson fanned 13 in seven innings. NU's 15 strikeouts was one shy of tying a school record set against Kansas State in 1991.

KSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring off a pair of hits in the first inning and adding two more runs in the fourth. In the fourth, the Wildcats capitalized on two hits, one walk and one Husker error to take control.

The Huskers rallied two pull within one in the fifth after Adam Stern singled on a bunt and Jamal Strong reach base on a walk, John Cole tripled down the right field to score the two runs.

Husker junior designated hitter Dan Johnson tied the game after homering off a first-pitch offering from Robertson. The Huskers missed an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh Stern singled and Strong reached base after being hit by a pitch. Stern and Strong advanced on a sacrifice from Adam Shabala, but Cole struck out and Cowan flied out to center field to strand the runners.

Kansas State's Graham McAllister hit a one-out double to set up Weishaar's game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth. R.D. Spiehs closed the game for the Huskers and forced Tim Doty to ground into a double play to end the inning.

Offensively Johnson and Stern each had two of Nebraska's nine hits. KSU managed just eight hits on the day.

Nebraska, which has scored just seven runs in its last three Big 12 games, fell to 8-6 on the year and 1-3 in league play. Komine was charged with the loss despite striking out 10 batters and walking just one in 7.1 innings.
