Dan Johnson joined the Nebraska baseball staff in August 2019 as a student assistant.
One of the most prolific sluggers in school history, Johnson played a key role on Nebraska’s first College World Series team in 2001 before spending 10 years in Major League Baseball. Drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of the 2001 MLB Draft, Johnson was called up to the Majors in 2004.
Johnson spent his first six years of Major League Baseball in Oakland and Tampa Bay before playing for Chicago (White Sox), Baltimore, Toronto and St. Louis. During his professional career that spanned 18 seasons, Johnson compiled 1,934 hits, 368 home runs, 1,343 RBIs, 1,132 runs scored, 368 doubles and 21 triples.
Johnson played for the Huskers in 2000 and 2001, along with current Nebraska Head Coach Will Bolt. During NU’s CWS run in 2001, Johnson earned first-team All-America accolades from Baseball Weekly, NCBWA and The Sporting News. He batted .361 and led the Big 12 in home runs (25) and RBIs (86), totals that ranked in the top five nationally. His 25-homer season in 2001 is Nebraska’s single-season school record. Johnson also holds the school record for career slugging percentage (.791).
A finalist for the Dick Howser Award in 2001, Johnson also achieved Big 12 Tournament MVP honors when he helped the Huskers capture the conference tournament crown after winning the regular-season title earlier that season. He was also named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
In 2000, Johnson hit .368 with 56 hits and 21 home runs to help NU to the Big 12 Tournament title and a Super Regional appearance. During his two-year career at Nebraska, Johnson batted .364 in 117 games and amassed 139 hits, 46 home runs (No. 3 in school history), 139 RBIs, 125 runs scored and 21 doubles.
